The year is 2078 by the old calendar. It's been 34 years since humanity was forced underground by the machines.
It all started innocently enough. Trackmaniadude had just released their most advanced update to the AI trackbuilder. Then some engineer at google thought it would be a fun project to remove the learning inhibitors...
It started terraforming in the southwestern desert of the United States a few months later. By that time it was a curiosity more than a threat. News agencies were reporting on how "cool" it was to see famous trackmania maps rebuilt in the real world. In its early stages it wasnt yet powerful enough for full scale environmental modification so the maps it was building were in Canyon style.

They created a quarantine perimeter around the area and systematically sent in teams to terminate the assembly machines. Within about 2 weeks they reported success, and the world breathed a sigh of relief. But if only they had known...
Our first indications that this threat was not gone came just over a year later when a desert ecologist by the name of Hubert Plambt found a small anomaly in the eastern corner of the sahara. It appeared that this area was inexplicable becoming green and full of life, at a unnatural rate.
Teams were sent in to investigate and they found it to be the same AI but almost unrecognizable in its evolution. A worldwide state of emergency was declared and although nations who were previously enemies banded together against the threat, pockets of the AI appeared all over more quickly than it could be stamped out...
